From the Back Cover
This book by the author of Why Am I Afraid to Love? contains insights on self-awareness, personal growth and communication with others. Why do people continually hide their real selves from the people around them? Why are so many so insecure and afraid to open up? The answer, explains John Powell, is that maturity is reached by communicating and interacting with others. This book considers the consequences our real self faces if no one else ever finds out what we are like. In this enduring classic, the companion to Why Am I Afraid to Love?, John Powell explains how to be more emotionally open, and shows how people adopt roles and play psychological games to protect their inner selves. The courage to be our real selves can be developed, and then we can begin to grow. Now newly designed for a fresh audience, Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am? is as relevant as it has been for twenty years. In the most troubled period of my life, someone suggested I read this heart-opening book. It launched my journey into learning to trustlife, people, and to love myself. Particularly helpful to those with low self-esteem, those who need to build courage to start on theirown, or anyone afraid of his own shadow: start reading this and doing the exercises. Two other books that also helped around the same time:You Are Not the Target by Laura Huxley and I'm Not Much Baby, But I'm All I've Got, by Jess Laird. These three books started myjourney to wholeness and happiness. Ultimately I found the 12-step program, (particularly Codependents Anonymous and Adult Children of Alcoholics), but also attended Unity Church (non guilt based spirituality), and studied the metaphysical teachings of Edgar Cayce, The Sleeping Prophet and the mystical writings of Joel S. Goldsmith. This book was a primer on the path. If you're attracted to it, I'd go ahead and get it. Really.I've recommended it many times to friends, particularly the confused, shy and those lacking forthright self-esteem and power.
Why am I afraid to tell you who I really am? will open up you heart and spirit to why we are so "self" centered and often afraid to tell others who we really are inside. Why am I afraid to tell you who I really am boils down to -- if I told you who I really am and you didn't like it -- it's all I've got. It's one of my favorite of all time books. Buy it, read it, and be sure to share it with your friends.
Well written in language that is everyday type. It focuses on the subject of self disclosure, and why it is so difficult for some people to do. A must read for students of psychology! Also the list of games near the end of the book, are so common to us humans. Far easier than the book "The Games People Play" by Eric Berne. I treasure this book and have bought more copies for friends!
Honestly, I read this book in1972, give or take a year either way.The concept of personal transparency presented here, when put into practice, changed my life for the better, so profoundly that it defies explanation.I have a friend that...well, you know the drill.
One of my favorite books. Have reread msny timesHelps me to trust mysrlf and be more tolerant of others and to accept life as a time for learning and I am just a student.
A lot of amazing information in this little book!A great read for those of us who have been hurt and are afraid to open up and be our true selves with people!
It was one of the most influential books in my life. I was recently reminded of the concepts so I came back to amazon and bought 2 copies.Read and apply! Drill down to the 5 levels of personal communication.
A good & sensitive beginner book for understanding the complex growth & resolution of childhood confusion & misinformation.
